My site visits with Professor Mohammed were a really valuable part of my rotation. During the visits, we talked about different cases and medications that we had encountered at our clinical sites. I really liked hearing about Professor Mohammed’s experience as an emergency medicine physician and his perspective on some of the cases we discussed. It was interesting to compare what he would do in certain situations with what I had seen during my rotation and hear his reasoning behind different management decisions.
I also enjoyed hearing from my peers about the medications they were seeing and using on their rotations compared to what I had seen. There was a lot of overlap, but there were also some differences depending on the site and the providers they were working with. Hearing these different experiences helped broaden my understanding of how certain medications are used in practice and how there can be multiple approaches to treating the same condition in the emergency department.
Professor Mohammed also gave helpful feedback on documentation, especially regarding how to write H&Ps. He suggested including a concise assessment that summarizes the important aspects of the case and the medical decision making behind the workup and plan. He explained that the assessment can briefly tie together the key findings and why certain tests or treatments are being ordered, rather than explaining each point individually in the plan. I found this advice really helpful and something I will definitely try to incorporate into my future notes.
Overall, the site visits were also a great opportunity to clarify questions I had from my rotation that I did not always have time to ask the preceptors I was working with. I appreciated the chance to talk through cases, hear different perspectives, and learn from Professor Mohammed’s experience in emergency medicine.
